While it may seem that you can turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in the iOS 11 control center

Wondering how to disable AirDrop, enable Night Shift, or change AirPlay output for the song you’re listening to? We'll show you how.

simply by toggling the feature off, that’s not exactly the case.

If you open up the Control Center and toggle off Wi-Fi, what actually happens? You’re disconnected from your current network and your phone doesn’t search for new networks. If you toggle off Bluetooth, you’re disconnected from connected devices and your phone stops searching for new devices.

But Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your phone actually remain turned on, meaning that they will continue to draw on your iPhone’s battery. It also means that certain features like AirDrop, Continuity features including Handoff and Instant Hotspot, AirPlay, and location services will remain active. Your iOS device will also remain connected to your Apple Watch or Pencil.

Aside from draining your battery, this intentional Apple feature opens users to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth security risks

There seems to be a sort of general malaise among users – the tech savvy and everyday users alike – that because your computer fits in your pocket, it can’t be infected by malware, Trojans,...

that you think may not be applicable because your features are “off.”

How to Really Turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Off

To really turn these features off, you’ll have to go to Settings > WiFi and Settings > Bluetooth.

What do you think of Apple making this a feature in iOS 11? Do you think they should change it? Let us know in the comments.
