HTC is holding an event on November 2nd, where it could announce two new versions of its U11 smartphone. The company sent out invitations for an event in Taiwan to local media today, with the note including a large “U” at the top, indicating that the HTC U line will be the focus there.
Over the past several weeks, leaks have come out suggesting there are two new phone models in the works: a mid-range device meant for Google’s Android One program, and a higher-end device meant to stand up to the latest flagships. It’s not clear if both will launch on the 2nd, but it seems safe to assume that at least one of them will show up.
The first of those is believed to be called the U11 Life, which will be a trimmed down version of the original U11. It’s rumored to have a 5.2-inch display, a Snapdragon 630 processor, and 16 megapixel cameras on the front and back. It’ll apparently come in two models, one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage and another with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Leaked images suggest it’ll have a shiny blue back like the original. Since it’s an Android One phone, you can expect its price to come in around $400, like the Moto X4.
HTC’s other phone is rumored to be the U11 Plus, which would be a bigger, better version of the original U11. It’s believed to have a nearly 6-inch display, with a 2880 x 1440 resolution, and an 18:9 aspect radio, putting it dead even with the Pixel 2 XL. It’ll apparently have a Snapdragon 835 processor, a 12 megapixel rear camera, and IP68 water resistance. It’s supposed to come in two models, a model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and a model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Basically, it’d be a whole lot like the Pixel 2 XL, except it’d be running HTC Sense instead of Google’s version of Android.
Even though an event has only been announced for Taiwan so far, it seems likely that both of these phones will be headed for the US and Europe as well, where they’ll go head to head with some other very competitive devices. HTC could have some VR news to share at the event too, but there aren’t any specific rumors just yet.
